Frequently asked questions
What size should YouTube Shorts be?
The recommended size is 1080 × 1920 pixels (Full HD vertical). That's the sweet spot: sharp on modern phones without huge file sizes. The minimum you should use is 720 × 1280 pixels.
What is the YouTube Shorts aspect ratio?
9:16 (vertical) is the recommended aspect ratio — it fills the entire phone screen. Square 1:1 videos also qualify as Shorts, but they leave empty space above and below your video.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to 3 minutes. Since October 2024, YouTube classifies vertical or square videos up to 3 minutes long as Shorts. That said, most high-performing Shorts are still well under 60 seconds.
What format should I export YouTube Shorts in?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Export at the same frame rate you recorded at (usually 30 or 60 fps), and don't bake black bars into a vertical video — upload clean 9:16.
What is the YouTube Shorts safe zone?
Keep important text, faces and logos clear of the top 14% (profile info), the bottom 35% (title, captions and buttons) and 6% on each side. Our checker page shows a visual preview of these zones.
